Belgian soil
2m x 2m
I moved to Belgium post-pandemic and found myself grappling with a profound sense of dislocation, struggling to feel at home in my new surroundings. After a year of navigating this feeling, I resolved to forge a deeper, more intimate connection with the land itself. To do this, I brought Belgian soil into my studio and transformed it into a tiled floor, where I could walk barefoot every day.
This meditative practice not only left traces of my footsteps but also witnessed the gradual transformation of the soil as it returned to its natural state. With each step, deeper questions began to emerge about the essence of belonging. Was the soil beneath my feet merely a material I borrowed, or had it become a part of my journey? Should I return it once the project concluded? After four months, the tiles almost completely returned to its natural form. I decided to return the soil to the place of its excavation.
